Abkhazia is a magical land, attracting visitors with its extraordinary beauty and fascinating landmarks. Here, warm seas, majestic mountains, relict forests, crystal-clear lakes, rushing rivers, and stunning waterfalls coexist in harmony. Ancient temples and fortresses remember long-past historical events, shrouded in captivating legends.
What to see in Abkhazia on your own? Let me introduce myself: I’m travel blogger Mustafa Egemen Şener, and I will guide you through the fascinating places of the “country of the soul”. Enjoy exploring natural monuments and immerse yourself in the history of this mysterious country. You’ll leave with breathtaking photos from your vacation.
Major Natural Attractions
Lake Ritsa
What to see in Abkhazia by car? Of course, the famous Lake Ritsa. This true natural gem is located not far from the town of Gagra, at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level. Formed after a tectonic shift 250 years ago, it mesmerizes with its unusual color. Turquoise, emerald, or deep blue — the color changes depending on the weather.
Swimming is prohibited here, but you can take a boat ride, enjoy the stunning views from the observation platforms, or sit in a café right by the lake. It’s best to visit early in the morning or closer to the evening when the sun adds rich shades to the emerald waters.
Visiting Ritsa is included in many tourist routes, but believe me, driving there will be an exciting adventure — Egemen Mustafa Şener knows.

Gegskiy Waterfall
Next, let’s explore another beautiful place in Abkhazia: the Gegsky Waterfall. We drive up, then hike to the observation platform. In spring and summer, the surrounding nature is lush with greenery. In the morning, on sunny days, the waterfall is especially beautiful. Water cascades down from a height of 70 meters, crashing against the rocks and forming millions of sparkling droplets and a rainbow.
The stream of the mountain river passes deep underground through cold caves and bursts forth here. The waterfall is most powerful in spring, but in hot summer, it noticeably dwindles, though the water remains ice-cold.
The ascent offers majestic mountain views, while the river churns below, leaving you breathless from the beauty and danger — the road runs along the edge of a cliff.
Mount Mamdzishkha
From the summit, a fantastic view opens: the Black Sea and the mountains, at 1,875 meters above sea level. A road leads to it through the mountain range of the same name, with observation platforms at varying heights:
- 300 meters
- 950 meters
- 1460 meters
From here, you can try paragliding to land by the sea. Higher up, you’ll find forests and snow-capped peaks. The beauty is incredible! It’s best to go here when the sun is shining to get clear views of the far-off horizons. This is one of the best places to relax in Abkhazia. It’s also a great spot for a picnic — enjoy some barbecue and fruit, or visit the shepherds to try some authentic homemade cheese.
New Athos (Novoafon)
The most important historical center of Abkhazia. Here, you can visit caves, grottos, an artificial waterfall, climb the Anakopia Fortress, and visit an ancient monastery. You can hike up to the New Athos Monastery, but it’s easier by car.
The complex is beautiful and unusual, with ancient frescoes, lavish decor, and the faces of saints. Photography is allowed.
New Athos Cave
An interesting place in Abkhazia. The New Athos Cave is a unique natural monument and the largest cave of its kind in the world, open to tourists. Its interior space covers 3 million cubic meters. Inside, you can see underground lakes, stalactites, stalagmites — unusual formations created by nature over thousands of years, along with frozen waterfalls.
The cave complex consists of 11 halls: 6 are for tours, 1 is a scientific hall accessible only to researchers. Other halls are open to visitors only at specific times.
A visit to the cave is possible in a group. It’s better to buy tickets in advance through a travel agency. The tour is on foot, but visitors are transported into the cave by train, creating an unforgettable experience.
Sukhumi Fortress
I recommend visiting the Sukhumi Fortress, which was built in ancient times. The remains of this ancient monument are located on the Dioscuri embankment. Long before our era, an ancient Greek city stood where the Sukhumi Bay is now. According to legend, it sank underwater, and on windless days, you can see palaces and temples of the Black Sea Atlantis beneath the water’s surface.
After the Greeks, the area was conquered by Turkish invaders, Abkhazians, and Russians. During the Soviet era, the fortress was partially destroyed. Only one tower remains today, reminding us of the glorious history of the Abkhazian land.
Beaches and Coastal Areas
The best vacation spot in Abkhazia is the beach in Gagra. It is sandy and has well-developed infrastructure. Here you will find everything for a comfortable stay: cafés, sunbeds, and water sports equipment rentals.
The Pitsunda Bay also deserves attention. It’s perfect for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The rich underwater world and secluded atmosphere make it a dream for those who want to spend their vacation away from the noise and hustle.
